Just Listed: American Headband

American Flag Headband
Today I listed this American Flag Knit Headband. It was one of those pieces that came out just how I'd envisioned it, which doesn't happen too often.

Great for keeping your hair out of your face and away from the barbecue's flames on the Fourth of July, or wear it over your ears to show your American Spirit in wintertime.

Last night I finished an American doggy sweater.  I'm going to list that soon, along with the pattern.  Now I need to buy some treats so Bess will model for me.

I Miss my Dishwasher!

There are many things I like to do by hand like knitting, crocheting, and sewing, however washing dishes is not on the list.

My dishwasher has gone on strike.

I don't know whether we'll be moving soon, so I don't want to invest in a new one, so now I'm stuck cleaning the old fashioned way.  Yuck.

Truth be told, the dishes are probably much cleaner than they were before the washer took its last breaths, but still...

Now I have the worlds largest dish rack, because if I'm going to have to wash them, I sure don't want to dry them.  Unfortunately, I have to leave the dishwasher open for them to dry which means tripping over the door.

Someday, if I'm ever wealthy, I'm not going to spend my money on fancy cars, designer clothes or expensive stylists.  I'm going to get a cleaning lady (or man)... Then I'll know I've really made it.

Another Sunday Run

I went out running this morning for the first time without a sweatshirt or my headband/earwarmer. It was in the mid sixties, and there were clouds in the sky so I didn't need my sunglasses yet.

No walking for me this time, and no huge gusts of wind.  I thought I was doing a really good pace and thought that I would get past the 12.6 miles/min.  Unfortunately, I was at 12.7.  Close, and I'll take it, but next week I'm going to try to do better.

In other news:

I listed a pair of lace fingerless gloves yesterday.  I actually made two pairs, one for the shop and one for tophatter.  That way I can advertise my shop without depleting my stock.

I also photographed a new piece which I'm going to try to list today.

Birthday? Not yet...

So, Wednesday night, the boyfriend and I are sitting and watching TV, and he's browsing on his computer, when all of a sudden he yells, "I AM SUCH AN IDIOT!"

At first he wouldn't tell me why he said that, but after some prodding said, "You're birthday is August 4th, right?"

I said, "Yes..."

He says, "So what is March 24th?"

I said, "Um... Saturday?"

Well, last night, I got a whole lot of presents, for no apparent reason whatsoever... All of it in Happy Birthday wrapping paper.

I guess he didn't want to wait a few more months.  I told him, that it's much better to be early than late, and now he's insisting that they're not birthday presents at all, just presents for nothing in particular.

...ha! I'll take them either way.

Slave to Technology

So, Monday night I went to a friend's goodbye party.  She's moving back to Buffalo.

Now I remember the old days, where someone would call you with a bunch of complicated directions (turn right here, turn left after the second stop sign that's hidden behind the bushes), you'd write them down and then you'd try and read them and drive at the same time.  If it was night time, you'd have your car light on.

Nowadays, it's supposed to be so much simpler. Someone texts you the address, you click on the link and it opens your gps maps app and gives you directions.

Well, the minute I got through the gate to the housing development, my phone ran out of batteries.  The developments here are a bunch of curving roads with weird names that randomly intersect with each other.  What's a girl to do?

Luckily, I can plug my phone into my car (yes, I should have done that in the first place), but then I had to drive around for 10 minutes until it had enough juice to turn on.  I didn't even know the address.

Of course there's a cop car, in front of one of the houses watching me drive in circles.  I was sure he thought I was casing the neighborhood.

When the phone came on, turns out the cop was sitting in front of the house I was going to.  No, the party wasn't getting out of hand. Turns out he was a friend stopping by to say hi.  He only stayed a minute as his radio went off and he had to do some actual law enforcement.

Hmmm, I still don't know if I prefer the old way or the new way.

Run with the Wind

Wow! I know runners talk about getting their second wind, but today was ridiculous.  Instead I was getting winded because of the very strong winds that were blowing.

I checked the temp and knew it was about 40 degrees, so I dressed accordingly.  The first part of the run was going fine, then, the wind kicked up.  It must have been at least 20 mph.

When it was coming from the side, it wasn't too bad, just a little cold, but then I turned the corner and it was coming straight at me. I felt like one of those mimes you see, but this was for real.  I had to stop twice as I felt like I was pushing against a sumo wrestler and try as I might it seemed like I wasn't getting anywhere.

When I turned the corner again, alleluia, the buildings were blocking the gusts, and the sun was shining and all of a sudden it felt really easy.  I made up some time on the last stretch, but still my average pace was 13 minutes per mile. Last week without the wind I was at 12.6.

Hopefully I built up some strength and next week it will be easier.

Just checked the weather site, my estimate wasn't too far off.  Wind was going at 23mph.

Book Review: Come Tell Me How You Live

We all know who Agatha Christy is, but when you read "Come Tell Me How You Live", you really get to know her.  That is because this is non-fiction.  It's all about her going on archeological digs with her husband in the thirties.

It's well known that international travel can be difficult now-a-days, but it's fun not only to read how hard it was then, but also how she handled it.  You get a real feel for what kind of person she was, and to me she seems like someone with a sharp mind and a big heart.

Even for those that aren't a fan of non-fiction, this is quite an enjoyable book.

Synopsis:

To the world she was Agatha Christie, author of numerous bestselling mysteries and whodunits, arguably the most popular writer in the English language. But in the 1930s she wore a different hat, traveling with her husband, renowned archaeologist Max Mallowan, as he investigated the buried ruins and ancient wonders of Syria and Iraq. Described by the author as a "meandering chronicle of life on an archaeological dig," Come, Tell Me How You Live is Dame Agatha Christie's first-person account of her time spent in this breathtaking corner of the globe where recorded human history began. It is a fascinating, eye-opening, vibrant, and vivid portrait of a place, a people, and a past, by a legendary writer whose extraordinary popularity endures to this day; an altogether remarkable narrative of everyday life in a world now long since vanished.

Lavender Sleeveless Top

Adding New Stock

I've finished my Easter top, and I'm almost finished with my newest scarf.  I'm off today, so I'm planning on taking pictures and listing them... well, probably one of them today and one of them on Thursday.  I like to spread it out.

Unfortunately, (well, kinda fortunately) tomorrow I go back to work again, and since there's only one day off, everything has to get done in one day.

It's not that there's a whole lot to do, but I'm so exhausted, and the fur monsters haven't had a proper snuggle in a while, so I also need some time to do that.

So tune in tomorrow and hopefully see one of my newest pieces!

Getting the Running Groove Back

So I've been having a lot of trouble with my runs lately.  I give up before I've finished my route, and sometimes I get half a block and think, "How am I going to make it the rest of the way?"

Because of this, I went back to doing sprints on Wednesdays and the long run just on Sunday.  So far it's working.  I actually finished my route for the first time in a while: 2.3 miles at a pace of 12.6 minutes per mile. I'm always happy when it's less than 13 minutes per mile since that's where I started at.

I actually felt myself getting in to a running groove a couple of times during the run.  Unfortunately, the minute you realize that you're in a groove, you're not in the groove any more.

I'm so proud of myself!  Someday I'll be able to run 4 miles. That is my goal.

What do they think of me?

So google keeps track of our searches, which we all kind of knew even before they went public with it. This doesn't really bother me as I don't really search anything that I wouldn't mind telling the world about.

What does interest me, is what kind of person does google think that I am?  I mean, I search a lot of things to answer crossword puzzle clues (after I've given it the old college try just using my head).  There's a lot of random information that I don't know and need to look up.  Google must think I'm weird.

I guess it thinks that I'm a sports nut, who is interested in nobel prize winners, oscar winners and obscure words, none of which is true. I don't look up that much knitting stuff or magic stuff (I have these things called books for that), so aside from etsy it probably thinks that I'm not very artistic.

I know it's a search engine and doesn't really have the capacity to think of me in any way, and it is only gathering information to sell ad space to people that want to sell me things, but still I wonder.  I hope google thinks I'm an interesting person beside looking up all of the sports stuff.

The boyfriend says, "Don't worry, they're not judging you."

Ipad for Kitty

When I was in Oregon, I inherited my mom's iPad.  It's actually quite cool, and though I would never have bought it for myself, I find myself using it a lot.  Especially for reading.

Not my cat, but a cute picture.
The other night, though, I got more entertainment out of it than I ever thought I would.  I was sitting there reading and Alfred (the cat) was demanding attention.  Well, I knew there was an app for everything, so I looked up cat toy in the app store.

Sure enough, there was a free one, which I downloaded and put up on the screen.  It's just a little cartoon mouse, running around a room.

Alfred was fascinated.  For 20 minutes he was transfixed by this little thing, and occasionally he'd put his paw on it which made the mouse run faster.

Finally he tried to lick it, which didn't taste quite the way he was expecting it to, so he ran off.  But it was fun while it lasted.

Funny Video: Snowman Prank

I'm not a huge fan of most pranks, but as a magician, I do like startling people a little bit.  This video cracked me up.

There might be a couple of expletives as people are prone to do when scared, so if you're at work, turn the volume down.

New Item: Infinity Scarf

Mint Blue Infinity Scarf
I had made and photographed this infinity scarf a while ago now, but I finally got it up and listed.

I love the versatility of this type of scarf as you can double it for a turtle neck effect or stretch it out over your shoulders to keep them warm and/or add modesty to an outfit should the situation require it.

Right now I'm finishing another sleeveless top made in lovely pastel purples, hopefully in time for Easter.  Then I think a pair of socks that sold that I really want to relist.

Happy etsy-ing!

Book Review: Room

Wow! We got to read another really great book for book club this month.  It was "Room" by Emma Donahue.

What Donahue did was take an incredibly horrible situation, and put it through a child's innocent eyes.  He thinks of everything as a game, and doesn't know how bad he has it.  It is so touching, and the strength of the mother is totally inspiring.

I read it in two days, as I really didn't want to put it down.

Synopsis:
To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer.

Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating--a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.

I'm Back

I came back yesterday afternoon, and now I'm home in Vegas.  The boyfriend forgot that he told me he couldn't pick me up from the airport and his plans changed.  So, the poor guy was waiting for me there, while I was at home snuggling with the dogs.

Since tomorrow is Friday, and I didn't do the favorites last Friday, I'm going to use those submissions to make the Friday's Favorites.

If you didn't get a chance to submit and want to, click on the link below:
