Book Review: Death with Interruptions

I was really excited to read "Death with Interruptions" by Jose Saramago.  His book "Blindness" was one of my favorites.  Unfortunately it's hard to top such a great book.

I must say that the first half of the book didn't live up to my expectations, though it was interesting and I enjoyed the premise.  It really got good when I got to the second part and death was introduced.  From that point on, I couldn't put it down.

Synopsis: On the first day of the new year, no one dies. This of course causes consternation among politicians, religious leaders, morticians, and doctors. Among the general public, on the other hand, there is initially celebration—flags are hung out on balconies, people dance in the streets. They have achieved the great goal of humanity: eternal life. Then reality hits home—families are left to care for the permanently dying, life-insurance policies become meaningless, and funeral parlors are reduced to arranging burials for pet dogs, cats, hamsters, and parrots.

Death sits in her chilly apartment, where she lives alone with scythe and filing cabinets, and contemplates her experiment: What if no one ever died again? What if she, death with a small d, became human and were to fall in love?

Auditions

I've been having a lot of auditions lately.  I remember when I used to get so nervous, and then I'd stress for days wondering if I got the job or not.

Nowadays, I've been to so many hundreds of them that they don't phase me anymore, and in fact, when I do get the job, sometimes I don't even remember auditioning for it.  There is very rarely a rejection letter in the entertainment industry, either you hear from them, or you don't.  It's usually best to forget about something once you've tried out, otherwise, you'll drive yourself crazy wondering.

Christmas was Wonderful

I know the photo doesn't go with the story, but it was just too cute.
Christmas was wonderful!  We had the boyfriend's family over and I cooked my first full Christmas dinner!  The turkey turned out great...and I was worried since I'd only made one turkey before, and everything was ready almost at the same time!  Yay for planning ahead.

We opened presents, drank mulled cider, and just enjoyed everyone's company.  I couldn't have asked for a better one.

The boyfriend gave me lots of cool gifts, but my favorite one was the portrait of our fur monsters together.  He couldn't actually get them to pose together, so he had to do each one individually and digitally put them together.  It is so cute and sweet.

I hope you all had just as much fun on your day.

Book Review: Sarah's Key

It has been awhile since I've done a book review, and I've decided to start bringing them back.

I recently finished reading for my book club, Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay.  I've read quite a few World War Two accounts both fictional and non-fictional, and this one was very poignant indeed.  I do think that I found the first part of the book more interesting than the second as you got to see both points of view of what happened from present day to the past.

Though not my favorite book of those times, this one will still get to you, right in your heart.

Synopsis: Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten-year-old girl, is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door to door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Desperate to protect her younger brother, Sarah locks him in a bedroom cupboard—their secret hiding place—and promises to come back for him as soon as they are released.
Sixty Years Later: Sarah’s story intertwines with that of Julia Jarmond, an American journalist investigating the roundup. In her research, Julia stumbles onto a trail of secrets that link her to Sarah, and to questions about her own future.
In Sarah’s Key, Tatiana de Rosnay offers up a mesmerizing story in which a tragic past unfolds, the present is torn apart, and the future is irrevocably altered.

Meeting Karina Smirnoff

On Saturday, Karina Smirnoff came by the Venetian to check out our Winter in Venice event.  The cast from the St. Mark's Square show came out to greet her and the Christmas cast.  She seemed nice, but we didn't really get a chance to talk to her as her people whisked her away to the next photo op right afterward.

This time, I'm the one in the black and white costume standing next to her.

Interview

Last night I was interviewed by a magician named Jeff McBride.  He does a weekly internet TV show, and I was the special guest.

It was loads of fun.  I got interviewed which made me feel like a celebrity, and then I got to co-host the rest of the show.  There was also a chat room on there, where people could comment about things in real time. It made me kind of nervous at first, but all the things that were said were really positive.

Now I'm off to go about my non-celebrity life which includes some cleaning... how glamourous...

Meeting Jordin Sparks

The Venetian just opened its "Winter in Venice" attraction for Christmas.  There's a show, a tree lighting and ice skating open to the public, plus entertainers strolling around during the day.

Me, Jordin Sparks, and some of the Venetian Cast
On opening night, some of us had to go and work the event after we finished our shows inside.  They knew there was going to be media there, and they wanted as many of us there as they could.

For the opening ceremony, Jordin Sparks sang a couple of songs and then went off to meet and greet in the VIP area.  They chose a few characters to come and join her for pictures.

While the cameras snapped away at us, I said, "I'm so sorry, the paparazzi just seem to follow me everywhere."  She laughed and thought it was funny.

I'm the one in the funny hat...

Flash Mob

This morning I'm up quite early, as I'm going to be a part of a flash mob.  Now, some of you might have seen some of the more traditional ones on TV, but this one is a little different.

This Flash Mob is at a computer convention, and we're coming in to surprise the conventioneers.  We were hired by one of the companies that is a presenter there, so it's kind of like advertising for the company.

This has become more and more of a trend lately, and the second one I've been hired for.  It's so much fun, and easy money, but I could do without the early morning hours.

Strange Gig... But Good

On Friday, I performed magic at a Curling Tournament, with special guests who were members of the US Olympic team!  Though I'd watched curling during the Olympics on TV, I'd never been to an actual tournament, nor had I performed at one.

During these tournaments, there is a bit of down time, and there's a bar that overlooks the ice rink for people to hang out in.  This is where I performed.

When I first walked in, I saw a bunch of people dressed up like cows, then there were pilgrims, rabbits and a bunch of other stuff.  I thought, "Wow, these curlers are sure strange!"...then it hit me that it was almost Halloween...duh!

Everyone was really nice and seemed to enjoy the magical break from the curling.  I got to perform for the Olympians as well, and they were really great, down to earth guys.  The guy that runs the tournament says that they'll hire me again next year if they have one... count me in!

Lost Doggy Update

Unfortunately, I could not find the owner of the Rat Terrier, and neither could my friend.  I had two responses to the craigslist ad, and one was close, and the other had the wrong coloring.

Since the lost doggy hated my friend's parents, she couldn't keep him any longer, and since my dogs wanted him for dinner, I couldn't keep him either.  There's no telling what the cat would have done to him.

I tried to give him away to everyone at work, as did the boyfriend at his place of business, but no luck.

We ended up taking him to a shelter that had more resources in finding the rightful owners so they could either reunite them, or prosecute them for dumping him.

It killed me to take him there, but I thought it was his best chance at finding a good home as he is quite adoptable, and loves other animals.  ... He was great with me, my boyfriend and my friend... he just didn't seem to like older people, but he had a little too much energy for them anyhow.

In treasury news:

So far this week's treasury, Bedazzling and Becoming, has 110 views, 24 comments, 59 clicks and 8 admirers.

Lost Doggie

Last night, while taking the fur monsters out on a walk, we stumbled upon a dog with a collar but no tags.  He was frightened of me, but loved my dogs... which was strange because my dogs were trying to kill him.  Since he had no tags, and looked like he'd been outside for a while, I knew this little guy needed some help.

I only had two leashes, but luckily one of my dogs is only 6 pounds, so I scooped her up, and got the leash on the new guy and brought him home.  I didn't hear anyone or see anyone looking around for their dog.  I told the boyfriend that we needed to take him to the vet to get scanned for a chip.

The vet tech scanned and lo and behold a chip! We were so happy, we were going to get this guy back to his home.

Unfortunately, when the vet tech looked up the chip number, all they found was the breeder that the dog came from out in Missouri.  And by this time it was 10pm in Las Vegas...way to late to call Missouri.

We couldn't take him back home, as the boyfriend and I would be at work all day the next day, and I was worried about what my dogs and ninja kitty might do to him while we were gone.  I really didn't want to take him to animal control.  Luckily my friend was able to take him in and is going to call the breeder in the morning to see if she can track down the owner.

Fingers crossed!

Halloween Gig

Well, you know from previous posts how much I "love" Halloween gigs.  Last night, I had a four hour one.

It was a charity event for people to bring their kids to.  It wasn't nearly as bad as my normal Halloween gigs.  To start with, very few adults were in costume, mainly just the kids, so with me in costume doing magic, it did make me stand out a bit.

Some parents thought I was a parent of another child, though, and would give me strange looks when I'd approach them and their kids.  They were cool, after they realized that I worked there.

Four hours walking on cement has really made me quite sore today, but the work week is not over yet.  I still have 6 shows today, 3 shows tomorrow and 6 shows on Monday at the Venetian.

Calgon! Take me away!

Cats and Dogs

My dogs get along with my cat, one a bit more begrudgingly than the other, but any other cats will send them into a tailspin.  Their existence bothers them and they turn from sweet angels to something you'd see on the Dog Whisperer.

There are a few neighborhood cats that are not afraid.  Usually we go on our walks peacefully (well, as peacefully as you can get with one dog that still has a bit of puppy in him), but sometimes the cats are out for a bit of entertainment.  They are smart enough to figure out that the dogs can't get to them if they're on a leash.  The dogs, however, have not figured out this key bit of information.

The dogs go crazy, and the cats cock their heads and just look at them.  Instead of running away, I try to calm the dogs down and get them to sit there, hoping that this will show them that there's nothing to get excited about.  If I see the cat when or before they do, I can usually do it, however if they see it first, I'm not quick enough before their emotions go up to 11.

It's even worse when it's not a cat... my "brilliant" dogs sometimes see plastic or paper bags in the street that resemble a cat in some way shape or form.  It usually takes me a little bit to see what has gotten them so riled up.  After calming them down, I take them over to the offensive litter, so maybe they'll see what idiots they were... *sigh*

Oh well, off for a walk now... cats and garbage, beware!

!!Just Listed!!! Slouchy Hat!

Warm Slouchy Red Knit Cap
I just finished, photoed and listed this red cable knit slouchy hat.  It can also be pushed up to be worn as a beret, for a dressier look.

This pattern is also knew, and after I've made a couple more of these hats, I might set about writing up the pattern and selling that as well.

I almost didn't list this as I wanted to keep it for myself.  If it makes it through Christmastime, I might just take it out of the store and onto my head... we'll see.

!!!New!!! Faux Fishnet!

Warm Faux Fishnet Fingerless Gloves
I just finished making these Faux Fishnet Fingerless Gloves!

I've always loved the look of fishnet, but due to the weather, it's not always practical to wear it.  I thought that something inspired by this look, just might to the trick, and I'm really happy how they turned out!

I'm going to wait and see what the response to these are, and if it's good, I'll probably branch out with a few different colors, and/or maybe some different trim.

The "Joys" of Halloween Performing

Now don't get me wrong, I love Halloween.  I love seeing everyone dress up in strange costumes, love the candy (except the candy corn) and love having kids coming to my door saying, "Trick or treat?"

However, I do not love performing around Halloween.  Where I do magic at the Venetian, I play a character, and as such wear a costume... year round.  However during the month of October, I am stuck with people asking me, "Where did you get that costume?"

Of course the average person is going to think I'm dressing up for the holidays, but the worst is the people that work there also think so.  They see me every day and yet in October, they forget and say things like, "Aren't you a little bit early this year?" Did they not have conversations with me last month or the month before?  You might think they are joking, but when I remind them that I always wear this, they say, "Oh yeah..."

Sometimes in the break room, the dealers ask me if they let me take the costume home for Halloween... and yet they don't think it's funny if I ask them if they get to take their uniform home so they can be a dealer for their trick-or-treating.

Don't worry, little kids, I'm not a Scrooge, and though I won't be dressing up for Halloween, I will have candy by the door, and will enjoy each and every one of your costumes.

The Things I get to Do

As a magician, most of the gigs I get are corporate affairs; usually for the top sellers, top buyers or employee appreciation.  Sometimes I get to work trade shows where I put on shows to gather a crowd in front of a booth.

Every once in a while, I get something different. I just got a gig at the end of October performing at a curling tournament.  I even get to perform for the US Olympic Curling Team! How cool is that?

Like most Americans, I don't actually follow curling year round, but come the Winter Games, I do tune in and have a great time watching these guys throw stones and sweep them across the ice.  I'm so excited, it's gonna be lots of fun!

Famous Encounter

I often get hired for events and go there not quite knowing what to expect.  The agencies send me out and I go.

Last week, I had a gig at Tao Beach at the Venetian.  I thought it was a corporate event, as they usually are, and I thought it would be a large event as they had booked me for three hours.

When I got there, it turned out it was a bridal party, of a bride, her maid of honor, and some other friends, about 7 or 8 total.  They were all super nice, and it was a joy to perform for them.

Later, a photographer came, and wanted pictures of me with the bride. I still didn't think anything of it.  Many brides want to record everything that happens on their wedding day (or weekend).

Of course, as a performer, I use google alerts, and lo and behold, a picture of me and the bride triggered an email.  My step-father saw it too, and he was the one that told me that it was Susan Sarandon's daughter Eva Amurri!  How cool!

My Cat wants me Dead

I think my cat is trying to kill me.  But he's being sneaky about it.  He knows he'll be blamed if he kills me in my sleep, so he's trying to make it look like an accident.

He'll run down the stairs, then stop on a dime mid-way, hoping that I'll trip over him.  When I don't, he looks at me with his cute yellow innocent eyes, and cocks his head like he's saying, "oops".

Then he'll run in and out between my legs hoping to mess up my walking across the room, and when that doesn't work, he'll hold on to my ankle while I'm on the move and lets himself be dragged.  On the plus side, walking with the ankle grab is a great way to clean the floor.

Maybe it's because I don't let him jump on the counter, or because I get mad when he steals my drinking straws.  It could also be that after a 15 minute session of petting, my arm gets tired and he wants more.  Or, I give him as many treats as it says to on the bag, and not as many as he wants.

...in any case, I think he has it in for me.

Friday's Favorites: Yellow! Anybody Home?

As the weather gets colder, we all need something to brighten up our lives. Yellow is the perfect color to do such a thing. It reminds me of the sun, cheerfulness and light. Take a little sunshine home with you today.

Here is the link to the actual treasury if you would like to blog, tweet or facebook about it:

Work Marathon

One of our performers at the Venetian is going to Singapore and so this week I have a work marathon.  Good for the bank account, but I know I'm gonna be exhausted by the end of it.  7 days straight of 6 shows a day, I'll probably be crawling home on the last day.

I'll be crawling to work today, that's for sure.  My body is still a little sore from jet skiing on Sunday.  Who knew how much work that would be?  There are muscles in pain right now that I didn't even realize that I used!  Well, it's good to know that a day of fun did something good for my body.... usually that's not the case.

In treasury news:

This week's They Blue Me Away treasury, so far, has 129 views, 30 comments, 64 clicks and 15 admirers.  If you haven't taken a look yet, please do.

Jet Skis: A Free Gift?!?

The boyfriend's friend gave him 2 jet skis and a trailer for free! He's been wanting a pair for some time now, but couldn't afford it.  The friend was getting rid of hers, and said he could have them he was ecstatic!

$50 each for new batteries.
$40 each for gas
$20 each for tags to get them on the lake
$30 each for new oil
...riding something you got for "free" on the lake? ...priceless

We are going to take them out on the lake for a spin today.  I'm packing a picnic lunch and we're gonna find a beach and feast.  Poor boyfriend has already gotten a sunburn from testing them out yesterday.  I'm gonna slather myself in sunblock.

Portland, Oregon

I'm in Portland, Oregon right now, visiting with my mom, her husband and her cat.  All three were happy to see me, but so far, the cat is the only one that purred.

I love the weather here.  It's so pretty.  Everyone keeps apologizing and saying that they hope the sun will make an appearance.  What they don't understand is that, I live in the DESERT! I see the sun almost every single day!  I'm totally digging these cool fluffy white things in the sky, and a temperature that doesn't suck out your will to live.  Maybe when Oregonians come to visit me, I should apologize for the lack of clouds.

Well, time to look at some more of the beauty and cuteness outside...especially the squirrels.  If we do have squirrels in Vegas, they have yet to show their faces to me.
