Submissions: Flowers

Every Friday I put together a treasury of some of my favorite items made by other sellers, post it on my blog and call it the "Friday's Favorites"!

This week I'm looking for anything with FLOWERS. It can be clothing, knits, jewelry, pictures or anything you've got that incorporates flowers.

Post the link to your flower items in the comments, and check back tomorrow for the Friday's Favorites Treasury!

Don't have any flowers in your shop? Feel free to post an item from one of your favorite shops to help spread the love.

Salvage mission update:

When going under the boat to look for tools, the boyfriend didn't take into account the amount of silt that had accumulated under there. If anything as heavy as a tool had dropped from the boat, it's probably buried at least a foot under there... so nothing recovered, but it was still a pretty fun adventure.

Flamingo Magic ... and a scuba dive

Last night I got to perform magic by the pool at the Flamingo Hilton. Though I'd been to the hotel many times, I'd never been out to the pool. There were four magicians performing for the managers of Anna's Linens, and I was in charge (sounds exciting, but all it meant was I had to call the booking agent afterward and tell him how it went.)

The people there were great, and they made performing enjoyable. I actually shop at the store myself, and met the manager of the branch by my house. It's really a mom and pop store that has gone national. The owner was really nice, and you could tell that the workers really respected him and weren't just being nice because he was the owner.

Salvage Mission:

Today after the boyfriend finishes work, we're going on a salvage mission. He's breaking out his scuba gear and going under the boat to collect all the tools that he's dropped (...and a couple of blackberry's). He has an underwater camera that's connected to the TV, so I'll be monitoring his progress. I'm not going under myself, as the water is too cold for a girl like me from Hawaii, but if he loses anything in the summertime, I'll be right there with him.

Singer? Or Puss in Boots?

So, even though I usually perform as a magician at the Venetian, yesterday I got called in to work to be a singer. One singer called in sick, one is on maternity leave, and one got insured on Saturday... I had to fill in one of the male parts. That doesn't mean that I had to come in and start singing baritone, I just filled in the blocking for the male singer. I got to wear our female-in-a-male-costume, which made me look like puss in boots without the tail or the ears. It was so HOT! It's a polyester shirt, with a velvet jacket with a polyester cape...under the hot lights, I think I lost five pounds in water weight. Any more layers and I would be at the sweat lodge trial in Arizona!

In knitting news:

I'm working on a summer vest-like jacket that I designed. I got the back finished last night while watching "Be Kind, Rewind" (a really funny movie, by the way) and got started on the right front. It would be really nice if I could finish it today, but with all of the edging I have to do at the end, it's probably wishful thinking.

Sunday Funday Video: 6 Fingers!

When I saw this commercial, I just had to laugh. Even as a girl, I know I would have wanted one as a kid... not that I was really into shooting anything, but I would have really liked the spy aspect of it. I could totally see my best friend and I using it for secret messages or something.

Book Review: The Midnight House

...But first, here are some of the Friday's Favorites Treasury stats so far: 34 views, 9 clicks and 14 comments. Haven't added your clicks yet? It's not too late.

Book Review:

I finished reading The Midnight House by Alex Berenson. Now granted, I haven't read any of the previous books where he was a character, but for the most part, this stood on it's own. However, I hate it when authors start different plots and drop them somewhere in the middle not to be spoken about again.

The main plot itself was interesting and sucked you it, and toward the end I couldn't read it fast enough...partly because I wanted to know what happened next, and partly to find out what he was going to do about one of the plots that happened in the beginning. Needless to say, I was only half satisfied.

Synopsis:

George Guidall's no-nonsense tough guy growl adds a sense of hard-boiled reality to this fourth adventure featuring coolly efficient CIA agent John Wells. Working with his considerably more emotional associate, Ellis Shafer, Wells investigates the assassinations of interrogation team members working on a group of jihadists at a secret location known as the Midnight House. Berenson switches from Wells's and Shafer's difficult and perilous search, which takes the former to and from Cairo, to a sequence of flashbacks involving the team members going about their grim job at the House. The result is a clever mix of detective story and spy thriller, with Guidall handling the chronological and genre shifts as smoothly and efficiently as he does the changes in accents.

Treasury Submissions in Blue

Blue Belly Tube Top: my newest tangled item!
Before we get to the submissions, I want to show off my latest! It's a Blue Belly Tube Top. The top is knitted and the bottom crocheted out of a really silky bamboo blend yarn. It has elastic at the top to keep it from falling down, and a drawstring under the bust to cinch it in as much or as little as you like!

Submissions:

Every Friday, I put together a treasury and feature it on my blog... it's called the "Friday's Favorites"!

In honor of my newest item, this week, I'm looking for blue. If you have any blue in your shop, put the link to it in the comments, and check back tomorrow for the Friday's Favorites!

Don't have any blue? You can always submit an item from another shop and help spread the love.

Ugh... Paperwork

What happened to this paperless society that people keep talking about. Today is all about paperwork for me. I can't find my interest statements for my taxes (and of course they are not available online), and I need to have them for my tax guy today. I guess for that one I'll be scrounging through files.

Then I need more paperwork for my loan modification. Some has to be printed online, and some needs to be located and some needs to be written. Paper, paper, paper, paper... My hands will be so bloody with paper cuts, I won't be able to knit today.

In other news:

I finished the new top that I've been working on for the past two weeks. It's one of those projects that you knit some, you pull out some, you crochet some, and then you pull out some more again. It took me forever to get it just right, and now I'm kinda sick of looking at it.

If I finish all my paperwork, then I'll be photographing and listing it today. Then it can go away on my stock shelf.... hopefully, by the next time I look at it, either I'll be shipping it off, or all be falling in love with it again.

How to train your Boyfriend

I was always taught that no matter how much you want to, you can never change your man. So many girls try, and end up disappointed or frustrated. It's not that they don't love you, it's just how they are.

Now my boyfriend is a slob. (OK, truth be told, I'm a slob too, but he's worse than me.) However, I've been coming up with ways to make it more livable, without him having to do much.

In the evenings he usually sits in his comfy chair in the corner of the living room, and trash will pile up all around him. (I swear that the corner can look like an episode of hoarders if I don't get to it in time). Now, I've bought a nice waste basket that I placed between the arm of the chair and the bookshelf, so he can throw stuff away (which is what I want), without having to get up (which is what he wants) win win!

He's also stopped leaving the empty ice trays in the fridge. I know he only does this because he doesn't want to fill them. I don't mind filling them, but I hate going into the freezer and finding no ice. So the deal is struck, leave the ice trays next to the freezer when one is empty and I'll fill them. Win win!

Now, I need to figure out how to get him to clean the fish tank... and how not to close the mayonaise so tight that I can't open it.... hmmmmm

Book Review: Little Green Men

It's been a while since I've done a book review, but my reading is kinda outpacing my blogging... but anyway, here's the latest.

On Thursday, I finished reading Little Green Men by Christopher Buckley. I do enjoy him as an author, and how his over the top writing, paints a funny satire of our society.

But even if you're not into commentary on life, the story does stand up on it's own. It made me think that even as ridiculous as it sounds, I could see something like this going on. And though it sounds like a Sci-Fi book, in my opinion, it isn't one. Just a funny and interesting novel.

Synopsis:

In Christopher Buckley's hilarious fourth novel, Washington, D.C., is naturally enough a place of sex, lies, and videotape. Unfortunately for Little Green Men's pundit protagonist, John Oliver Banion, it is also the HQ of Majestic Twelve, a very, very covert government project. Since "that golden Cold War summer of 1947," MJ-12 has had a single mission--to convince taxpayers that space invaders are constantly lurking below what's left of the ozone layer. "A country convinced that little green men were hovering over the rooftops was inclined to vote yea for big weapons and space programs," the author thoughtfully explains.

But one disgruntled operative wants out. Nathan Scrubbs is fed up to the back teeth with the art of alien abduction--not to mention his cover as a Social Security flunky--so when his request for a transfer is quashed, he drunkenly decides to take it out on ubiquitous ultra-prig Banion, who happens to be on TV at the time. The ensuing high-tech kidnap, at Maryland's Burning Bush Country Club, is only one of the thousands of convulsively funny scenes in Little Green Men.

Cat or Dog

I really thought that when I went to the pound that I adopted a dog. I mean, I got him in the dog section, he looks like he has pug in him, and for the most part he acted like a dog.

...and I thought cats were the ones who liked to play with yarn. You always see those super cute pictures of cats tangled up in yarn, and videos and cartoons of them chasing after balls of yarn.

Well...I think I adopted a cat that looks like a dog. I woke up this morning to find all the yarn on my bottom shelf strewn all over the bedroom floor. Some of it, I had to follow all the way down the stairs. Some started in the bedroom and went all the way into the bathroom. When I called my shop All Things Tangled, I didn't mean my things.

Luckily it was mostly scrap yarn from old projects...but still... there's going to be a lot of untangling today.

Sunday Funday Video and Japan Update

Yesterday, one of my friends in Japan finally contacted me via facebook. He told me that Fukuoka wasn't affected as much as some other areas of Japan were. He said that all the magicians and singers that I worked with over there were just fine. Yaaaaaaaaay!

Sunday Funday Video of the Week:

Now to celebrate with this video. This little girl is very funny and very smart and not afraid to tell you exactly what she wants!

Becoming a Citizen

Yesterday, I got to go to my first naturalization ceremony! It wasn't for me, but for my friend from Russia who is now officially a US Citizen. It was great!

Everyone in the courthouse is really friendly on naturalization days. I've been to the same courthouse, in the same room as a matter of fact, for jury duty, and everyone (I mean the staff, not the people who are there for their duty) was very grumpy. This was a day of celebration, and you could tell on every one's faces from the people actually becoming citizens, to the security staff.

There were speeches and everyone took their oath, some even changed their names to sound more American. My friend kept his, as it is Alexander and when studying for the test, he always remembered Alexander Hamilton's name.

I have one friend now, from Moldova, who is now waiting for his test date and feverishly studying.

In Tsunami News:

As some of you may know, I have worked in Japan on and off for years, and I'm very frustrated with the news. I know that the whole country was not in the earthquake zone, and the tsunami didn't hit every coast, but after listening to CNN, you would think that is the case.

I have been googling Fukuoka to see if my friends are OK, and it seems no one has any information if anything happened there. I've only found one entry that said they had knee high water... Even the Japanese papers seem to only focus on Tokyo.

I've heard from one friend in Tokyo and he's fine, but I'm still waiting to hear about my friends in Fukuoka.

In Favorite's news:

We had one sale from the Friday's Favorites yesterday! Congratulations birdsnestyarns!

Submissions and ... What's a Day Off?

I didn't post yesterday, because I had my only "day off" this week. Though technically I had Monday off, it didn't count because my dad was in town and I spent the whole day doing touristy things with him and his girlfriend.

Yesterday, it was all about the laundry, and the bills, and the cleaning, and the shopping, and the relaxing... wait a minute... there was no relaxing with all that other stuff to do!

One of the performers at the Venetian is doing another show this month, so we are all covering for him. Yes, that means more money for me, but I'm also working a lot more than I'm used to. I wasn't even able to list anything in my etsy store this week.

White hoodie for your Dog!

Submissions:

Since there are many clouds in the sky at the moment (which for Vegas is a rarity), I'm going to go with a white theme for this week.

For those that don't know, every Friday I put together an etsy mini of some of my favorite items made by other sellers, post it on my blog and call it the "Friday's Favorites"!

This week's theme is white. If you have any white items in your shop, then post the link to them in the comments and check back tomorrow for the Friday's Favorites!

OMG It's Early...

I'm sitting here right now at what I consider the butt-crack of dawn, and I'm totally not used to having to be up this early.

Today I have to go to the Venetian for a photo shoot. I'm not really sure if it's for advertisements or what..though the egomaniac in me is hoping for advertisements. I am on a few of the billboards at the moment, but it's one of those pictures that unless you know it's me, and unless you turn your head and squint a little, you wouldn't recognize me. We shall see... At the moment, bed is sounding a little better than fame.

In other news:

My dad came to the one woman show last night. I was positive that he was going to hate it as he doesn't usually like the things that I'm in. He also doesn't know how to watch things as a dad (he's a director and theater critic by trade), and so is overly critical.

He actually really enjoyed it, and actually told me that I was good! Even the few times he has thought I was good, he's never said it to my face...I usually have to find out from my sister.

He's in town one more day, so after the photo shoot, sleep will be out of the question as I'm sure there's some sightseeing that he wants to do.

Relapse? Or Fatigue?

So, I'm thinking that if you just got over being sick, then running through the Venetian (which must be a mile at least though I haven't measured it out), is probably a bad idea. I had just finished my last show at the Venetian, so I walked over the bridge to Treasure Island to meat my dad for dinner (did I mention he was in town?). Well, on my way back I realized that time had gotten away from me and if I didn't hurry, I was going to be pushing it to get to my one woman show.

So off a charged through the grand canal, my only thought being, "please don't let there be a line at the Coffee Bean, so I can get a cup on my way to the car!" (Yeah, I have my priorities).

Everything was fine, got my coffee, got to my car and headed out to the theater, when all of a sudden, waves of nausea hit me. Now all that's going through my head is that I have to stand up in front of a bunch of people for over an hour, making them laugh and not letting them know that I wanted to throw up, and how was I going to do that.

Luckily fate was smiling on me, and there wasn't enough people to do the show. For the first time in my life, I was happy that a show was canceled.

Still a little queasy today, but I'm not planning any sprints in the near future.

Though I've been told it's cold in many places across the country, it's not here...though I wish it was. The summers in Las Vegas are brutal, and the longer I can put it off, the better.

That said, some of you might be looking forward to the sunshine, so today's Friday's Favorites are all about Summer! Get them while the gettings good, and bring a little warmth in your home to chase away the chill.

Sick... Ugh!

So yesterday, I left work halfway through because I was sick. I know I caught it from the stilt walker and the juggler (who are father and son, who were both working with me the other day). Usually if one person is sick, I don't often catch it, but working closely with two sick people, well, that did me in.

Thank god for thera-flu! After a quick stop at the drug store where I picked up medicine, throat drops and chicken soup, I lay on the couch with my doggies, drifting in and out of my drug induced slumber. Later on, the boyfriend heated me up some soup and spiked it with a bunch of cayenne pepper. After that, I knew I was already on the road to recovery.

I'm feeling much better today, but I probably won't do anything too strenuous as I'm at that point where it could easily turn around or plummet right back into relapse. Gibbs, Bess and my buddy Theraflu will be spending a lot of much needed sofa time together today.
