Book Review --A Thousand Splendid Suns--

After reading "The Kite Runner", I knew I was going to have to read more books by Khaled Hosseini. I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I can't say that it was better than "The Kite Runner" because both were so good and so different. The only similarity is that they took place in the same place and time frame.

The characters were wonderful, and though, of course, I didn't love them all, each made me feel something different. Some you hated, some you wanted to be your friend, some you wanted to be your father, and as in life, some let you down in your expectations of them.

There were tears throughout, as it was a heart wrenching story. If you liked/loved "The Kite Runner", you definitely must pick up "A Thousand Splendid Suns".

Synopsis

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

  2. I second your review. I thought this second book was also good-- although in a different way from the first. This one is definitely more intense and I had to at many times, put it down for while because the plot was so disturbing and I would get too emotionally involved with the characters. But overall great book and I also recommend it!
